The most interesting decision in this house was leaving something alone. An original brick chimney mass runs through the kitchen, and rather than furring it out and drywalling over it, the design keeps it exposed and lets the near-black cabinetry and white quartz work against it. The contrast is what gives the room its weight.

The Challenge
A galley kitchen is a difficult shape — it wants to feel like a hallway. And a period house carries details that are easy to lose in a renovation, but hard to get back.
The Approach
Running the dark cabinetry the full length of both walls turns the narrow proportion into a deliberate one instead of a compromise. Brass hardware and warm oak flooring keep it from going cold. In the living room, symmetrical built-in shelving flanks the fireplace, giving the room the composed front wall the original plan never had.
